This is a fancy way of saying how much lenses bend light to make things in the world clear to you. A higher refractive index number indicates that the lens is thinner and has a stronger effect to bend the light. The refractive index of a lens is measured when compared to the space in which it sits, and these examples of such as 1.61 and 1.67 along with other options reflect this. And so, 1.67 lenses can bend light a little better, so they’re thinner and lighter.
As you can see from these examples, the higher your prescription, and the bigger the frame, the more critical it is to work with the thinnest lenses possible.
